World Language Placement and Credit Options at Northern Kentucky University
The WebCAPE placement test is required, but non-binding, for all students who begin language study in French, German, or Spanish in a course higher than 101. You may take this test on-line or in NKU's language lab. The WebCAPE placement test is not compatible with the AOL browser. If you use AOL as your internet service provider, please take the placement test on campus in the language lab or in another computing lab. You must normally take the CLEP or WebCAPE exam and apply for FLIP before the end of your first week of language study at Northern.
NKU offers retroactive credit for students who begin their study of a language at a level beyond the beginning course through the World Language Incentive Program, or FLIP.
We offer two other possibilties for credit for previous language study: AP credit and CLEP credit. FLIP, the World Language Incentive Program, is the most generous of the three options.
Our placement guidelines tell you how to select the appropriate course based on your WebCAPE score and high school language experience. You are not required to accept the placement recommended by the WebCAPE scores, but you may be removed from a course if you select a course that does not fall within our placement guidelines.
The placement policy reminds you that you cannot receive credit for a general studies course in a particular language that is lower than one you have already completed.
